Kimball Ramonde Thomson

We are sad to advise the passing of our friend and fellow Stude nut,

who passed away Monday evening, 21st February 2011 aged 61.

Kimball died in hospital after a long battle with cancer.  He had close friends around him.

He was in Christchurch at the time on a road trip with friends. Going on road trips was something he did all over New Zealand almost every weekend in one of the many cars of different makes that he had interests in.

A private ceremony was held on Thursday 24 February where he was buried next to his parents in Christchurch.

For many of us Aussies we met him at the Adelaide, Gold coast and Ballarat Nationals. Some knew him on earlier Nationals to New Zealand. Kimball was not only a member of SDCNZ, but also SCCNSW and SCCQ.

One of the best achievements I believe he made was the organisation and running of the 2006 Masterton Nationals. For those who attended, you might agree with me that it was probably the best National Meet to be held in either Australia or New Zealand. Kimball put a lot of time, effort and his own money to make that such a great event for all to enjoy.

Another achievement was at the Hamilton Nationals last year where he took 7 cars. (6 Studes and the '66 Impala). Kimball always had one of his cars being maintained or restored in one way or another because he wanted to promote Studebaker out in public and wanted them to be in good running order. Quite often he would attend shows with 4 or 5 of his own Studes with friends helping out to drive the other cars for him. This goes to show his commitment to promoting the brand by getting as many vehicles on show as possible.

Kimball's last Stude event in Australia was last August where he flew over for the weekend to attend the Queensland Concours. He also came over in June for the Wintersun Festival in Coolangatta which he said was one of the best car shows he'd been to.

Where ever you may know him from, he always left a lasting impression.

He will be a sorely missed by Friends in New Zealand and Australia alike.

Steve Leyden.
